Layer separation workflow

Turn Raster Color Layers into Separate Vector Layers

Separate a multi-color raster diagram into named vector layers while preserving boundaries, labels, and intended material roles.

Intended result

Build one named vector layer per functional color or production role when a multicolor schematic, sticker, or machine diagram must become editable paths with each color isolated.

Tracing a full-color image as one silhouette discards the information needed for production. Layer separation should preserve functional meaning: cut versus engrave, insulation versus copper, road versus label, or product color versus background. Decide the layer contract before tracing.

01

Define layers by job, not by appearance

List what each color does in the final workflow. Colors that look different may belong in the same cut layer, while visually similar colors may require different power settings. Create the target layer names first so tracing results have an obvious destination.

Verify

  • Name layers by production role.
  • Assign a fallback color for display only.
  • Record any colors that must remain visually distinct.
02

Separate colors with controlled tolerance

Compression creates multiple nearby shades. A selection tolerance that is too narrow fragments regions; one that is too broad absorbs anti-aliased borders. Test tolerance on a representative corner before applying it to the full image.

Verify

  • Include a sharp edge and a soft edge in the test.
  • Compare counts of isolated fragments.
  • Avoid global color replacement until boundaries are checked.
03

Trace each layer independently

Convert each functional color into its own geometry, then align all layers against the original. Preserve shared boundaries deliberately: either let layers meet exactly or create the intended overlap for printing and cutting.

Verify

  • Overlay each traced layer on the source.
  • Check counters, connector lines, and narrow gaps.
  • Remove hidden duplicate boundaries only after alignment.
04

Verify names, colors, and round-trip output

Open the delivered file in the target application and confirm that layer names, visibility, and colors survived. Export a production copy and compare it with the editable master. A visually correct preview does not prove that layer metadata was retained.

Verify

  • Toggle every layer independently.
  • Confirm no production geometry sits on an Untitled layer.
  • Keep the source raster and editable master together.

Common failure modes

  • Do not equate every visible shade with a separate production layer.
  • Do not use anti-aliased edge colors as reliable material labels.
  • Do not flatten the result until layer names and visibility have been checked.
